London, UK, 14 May 2013 – Canon today adds a new category to its range of high-performance super-telephoto lenses, with the introduction of the EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4x to Canon’s acclaimed L-series. The EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4x features a flexible 200-400mm focal range with a fixed f/4 aperture, 4-stop optical Image Stabilizer and for the first time in a commercially available lens, a built-in 1.4x extender. These features combine to provide an outstandingly versatile lens for professional sports or wildlife photographers. A robust magnesium alloy design, environmental protection and specialised lens coatings also make it ideal for mobile use, combining with the finest quality optics to deliver exceptional results, even in the harshest conditions.

Get closer to the action with superior image quality
The reach of the EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4x is boosted by its internal 1.4x extender, which is engaged or disengaged at the flick of a lever to provide an extended focal length of 280mm to 560mm – allowing photographers to get even closer to distant action. Ensuring the highest image performance, the optical design includes both fluorite and Ultra-low Dispersion (UD) lens elements, which help minimise chromatic aberration and eliminate colour blurring. Advanced anti-reflection SubWavelength Structure Coating (SWC) and Super Spectra Coating also reduce ghosting and flare. Thanks to the use of the latest optical technologies, image performance is unaffected when the integrated extender is used.

With a constant f/4 aperture the use of high shutter speeds to capture fast-paced action or a low-light scene is possible. A newly designed optical Image Stabilizer, which provides users with a four stop advantage, while IS ‘Mode 3’ applies image stabilisation only at the time of exposure – ensuring that photographers can pan with fast-paced action without IS overcompensating for movement. Below you’ll find just very few tests (you’ll find lot more over the net). But at this point we fully agree with and conclude the same that another user has already said:

“This proves that Canon has intentionally worsened the video mode of 5D3 to make it look soft and blurry to not cannibalize the Cinema-EOS-line. Steve Jobs once said that if you do not cannibalize your own products, somebody else will.”

Although this is happening since years ago in all their DSLRs, probably earlier than Canon decided to start developing a specific EOS Cxxx line.

Canon could manage their own line of cameras in a much better way than just worsening the video mode that made them earn SO MUCH money and changed the industry…

Sadly indeed, while Chief Managers at Canon Inc. don’t change their way of doing business… this probably won’t happen.

Although Magic Lantern can make them think better…

This news is SO HUGE that even DPReview.com (which has a “NDA” with Canon since very long ago) has posted about it… We wonder what are now Canon Managers at Japan thinking.

Recently, the Magic Lantern team has achieved what seemed impossible: RAW Video recording with Canon EOS 5D Mark III

Very briefly, it means you’ll be able to capture video in REAL Full HD (1920×1080) and even higher resolution at 24 frames per second with an amazing dynamic range, thus giving lot more flexibility for post processing.

For those who still don’t know what Magic Lantern is: it is a firmware add-on that includes an amazing amount (seriously) of functions and improvements.

This is probably the biggest improvement that Magic Lantern has achieved so far.

The tests show a huge improvement over the current H.264 in-camera recording (and current “clean uncompressed HDMI output”) in terms of both resolution and dynamic range.

The current code capable of shooting RAW video in the EOS 5D Mark III is still not officially available by Magic Lantern. There are still lot of tests and corrections to do. But due to the fast development around it we may expect an alpha release soon.

Currently it is fully working on 5D Mark III with fast 1000x CF cards. If everything goes fine and the hardware is capable, it would be ported to other models.

Please note that RAW video recording requires a very fast writing speed since the amount of data is huge.

Canon Managers should change their mind

This is another proof of what this amazing camera can deliver, the huge potential it has inside.

It is really sad that Canon seems not willing to officially deliver this potential to their customers, even when it CAN.

If a group of programmers without any help from the hardware developers achieved this, HOW MUCH MORE could Canon do?

In our opinion Canon Chief Managers are reaching the limits and are hurting their own company with so conservative attitude.

They made the whole Canon community wait more than 6 months for the latest firmware 1.2.1, which brought almost no real improvement in terms of image quality (no higher resolution, no more dynamic range, nor even audio in the HDMI output signal!).

It seems Canon still hasn’t understood the huge benefits that the 5D Mark II gave just few years ago. Canon kept making DSLR cameras with the minimum possible resolution in Video mode (not “real 1920×1080″ pixels at all) and features (not even “Peaking” as a basic video feature found in lot cheaper cameras). They just deliver the inner potential “enough to sell”.

But the community is tired of seeing “crippled” cameras with a HUGE potential that is not given to their loyal customers.

Canon Managers should realize that there is a limit for doing so and if they don’t give higher quality in many aspects (that don’t even need a hardware change, just an improved firmware that takes REAL advantage of current hardware), someone else will do either with their own products or with another (competition and 3rd party manufacturers).

Disclaimer: By no means we are trying to smear Canon’s good name and reputation, at all. We love and use Canon cameras & lenses since long ago, but we do not like nor agree with their current marketing and management strategies. We are tired of “crippled” cameras that do not deliver the huge potential they have inside.

Canon has recently released firmware update 1.2.1 for the EOS 5D Mark III.

There are currently some reports about “dead” cameras when trying to update the EOS 5D Mark III with an Eye-Fi SD card.

In these cases the users never got the option in the menu to update the firmware and press “OK” to continue, but the camera got “dead” (“frozen” in fact), non responsive for long time.

Please note that the firmware update 1.2.1 fixes list states in point 9:

“9. Fixes a phenomenon in which the camera may not function properly when an Eye-Fi card is used.“

This problem is probably fixed in the new firmware, but you still have a previous firmware to update, so the Eye-Fi SD card may not work properly.

So our suggestion is:

Do NOT use Eye-Fi SD cards to update the firmware.

This simple precaution should avoid this inconvenience.

Canon Inc. has officially released the previously and widely announced firmware update for the EOS 5D Mark III:

Changes

Firmware Version 1.2.1 incorporates the following functional improvements and fixes.

1. Uncompressed HDMI output is now enabled.
2. Enables the center AF point to autofocus when the camera is used with Canon EF lens/extender combinations whose combined maximum aperture is f/8.
3. Improves the speed of the camera’s acquisition of focus when using a Canon Speedlite’s AF-assist beam.
4. Fixes a phenomenon in which the LCD monitor may freeze and display Err 70 or Err 80 when a still photo is taken during Live View or in movie shooting mode.
5. Fixes a phenomenon that may occur when the continuous shooting priority setting is enabled for multiple exposures, such that, after the sixth image is taken, there is a slight pause before the remainder of the sequence is completed.
6. Fixes a phenomenon in which the viewfinder display shows incorrect information during AEB shooting.
7. Communication with the WFT-E7 Wireless File Transmitter has been improved.
8. When images have been successfully transferred with the WFT-E7 Wireless File Transmitter through the FTP protocol, an “O” will be displayed. When images have not been successfully transferred with the WFT-E7 Wireless File Transmitter through the FTP protocol, an “X” will be displayed.
9. Fixes a phenomenon in which the camera may not function properly when an Eye-Fi card is used.
10. Fixes a phenomenon in which the focal length value listed in the Exif information is not displayed correctly for images shot with the EF 24-70mm F4L IS USM lens.
11. Fixes a phenomenon in which the lens firmware cannot be updated properly.
12. Corrects errors in the Arabic language menu.
13. Fixes a phenomenon in which the camera changes the AF microadjustment value to -8.
14. Fixes a phenomenon in which the on-screen guidance cannot be fully displayed when setting the maximum limit value for the “Setting the ISO Speed Range for Auto ISO” option.

* Items No.1 through 12 have been incorporated into firmware version 1.2.0.
* Items No.1 through 14 have been incorporated into firmware version 1.2.1.

Firmware Version 1.2.1 is for cameras with firmware version 1.2.0 or earlier. If the camera’s firmware is already version 1.2.1, it is not necessary to update the firmware.

Canon has recently announced a firmware update for the EOS 6D DSLR camera:

Details

Firmware Version 1.1.3 incorporates the following fix.

Fixes a phenomenon whereby the Date/Time/Zone settings screen appears on the LCD display, after the user has already configured these settings.  The values for the Date/Time settings may reset if the backup functions which retain those values do not perform properly.

Even if the camera does not exhibit this phenomenon currently, it may in the future. We recommend that you update the Firmware to version 1.1.3 as soon as possible.

Helpful Information:

Firmware Version 1.1.3 is for cameras with firmware up to version 1.1.2. If the camera’s firmware is already Version 1.1.3, it is not necessary to update the firmware.

  HOW to use Nikon “G” lenses on Canon EOS DSLR cameras

There are lot of cheap adapters to mount Nikon lenses on Canon EOS bodies, but they work only with Nikon lenses with aperture ring (you can also mount a “G” lens but you’re unable to control the diaphragm, meaning it will be always wide open)

BUT if you’re interested to use Nikon “G” lenses (without aperture ring) on a Canon EOS body, you should check out this:

• Novoflex EOS/NIK-NT Adapter for Nikon G Lenses to Canon EOS DSLR Cameras

That is a very reliable way to use, for instance, the amazing AF-S Zoom Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8G ED AF Lens on a Canon EOS body. You won’t be able to get AF, use the camera in some modes like Tv or P or get advantage of some other functions, but it’s indeed a great way (almost the only one) to use Nikon “G” lenses on a Canon body and be able to manually control the aperture (and focus, of course).

The cheap adapters to mount Nikon lenses with aperture ring or the Novoflex EOS/NIK-NT adapter mentioned above do NOT have optic elements, hence the image quality is NOT affected.

On July of 2012 Canon announced their 1st mirrorless camera: the Canon EOS-M. You can check the official press release and additional information here: Announcement: First Canon EOS M Mirrorless Camera.

At that time some hands-on preview were posted on internet by many renowned sites showing some features of the new system.

One of those features shown on the EOS-M was the 3x-10x Digital Zoom that Canon introduced in the EOS T3i/600D but mysteriously disontinued in next models like EOS T4i/650D.

BUT… if you get a Canon EOS-M body now, or read the User Manual, you’ll find that this feature is NOT available anymore. Canon removed it from current firmware of EOS-M.

WHY? Good question to ask Canon.

The Digital Zoom was especially VERY useful at the “3x” low end because there was almost no image quality degradation and you got a Full HD capture of the center of the sensor with almost no aliasing and moire artifacts. Additionally, it was like multiplying your lens’ focal length several times, which was EXTREMELY useful for Macro and Super Telephoto video recording.

The supposed argument that Canon got rid of this feature (also in the T4i/650D) to encourage customers to buy bigger and lot more expensive lenses is not true, because:

• This feature is only available for video, not for stills, so the usage is very limited
