Few days ago we got confirmation from B&H that this week they will receive a new shipment of Canon EOS 5D Mark III bodies without the “top LCD light leak” issue.

We were concerned about posting and suggesting to pre-order the 5D Mark III until we had additional information and confirmation about the new shipment. We didn’t like the idea of suggesting to buy a camera with any possible issue, even if that issue is very small and may not affect most users.

So the good news is that according to B&H they will receive a shipment of 5D Mark III bodies without that issue (please note that according to Canon’s Product Advisory the affected cameras are only those with specific serial numbers. Check it here for more details).

Canon has released firmware update version 1.1.2 for the EOS 5D Mark III:

Changes

Firmware Version 1.1.2 incorporates the following improvements and fixes.

1. Supports a new accessory, GPS receiver GP-E2.
2. Fixes a phenomenon where a pink cast may develop over the image when the shutter is completely pressed with the camera’s power turned off (by the auto power off setting).
3. Fixes a phenomenon where the camera operation stops after one shot when shooting in High Dynamic Range (HDR) mode.
4. Fixes a phenomenon where the Shooting Date/Time in the EXIF data of the image shows a later time than the actual shooting time.
5. Fixes the time zone for the Samoa Islands.
6. Corrects errors in the Finnish menu screen. (Products for the Japanese market do not display the Finnish menu.)

Firmware Version 1.1.2 is for cameras with firmware up to version 1.0.7. If the camera’s firmware is already Version 1.1.2, it is not necessary to update the firmware.

*Extracting the downloaded file: Right-click the zip file, and then select Extract All to extract the file. The extracted folder contains the firmware (file name: 5D300112.FIR / file size: 17,780,108 bytes) and instructions on the firmware update procedures (a PDF file in five languages: Japanese, English, French, Spanish, and Simplified Chinese).

Additional comments

There is no mention to any of the reported and requested fixes and improvements, such as fix for the issue with some lenses with Image Stabilization system, an improvement for the ALL-I mode which shows macro blocking and noticeable noise even at low ISO and a better sharpening algorithm when sharpness is set higher than zero (otherwise it’s almost useless since it creates halos).

This is weird indeed since the issue with some lenses was reported and Canon confirmed it.

Let’s hope that Canon updates the firmware in near future implementing those fixes and improvements.

Phenomenon
In extremely dark environments, if the LCD panel illuminates, the displayed exposure value may change. However, based on the results of extensive testing this change in exposure value will not noticeably affect the captured image.

Additional Comments

Canon has at least two alternatives:

1- Offer free repair for those who would like this issue fixed on his/her 5D Mark III.

2- Firmware Update and clarifications in the User Manual.

The firmware update could implement something like this:

When the user press the top LCD backlight button, the AE locks. This would mean you could check the exposure for few seconds without changing it in dim light (neither bright light).

But this also carries a problem: when shooting, especially when using the viewfinder, the user may press the light button by mistake and the AE would then lock. So Canon would need to find a solution to avoid this potential operational inconvenience.

One solution could be, for instance: the LCD light would only turn on if you press and hold it for 1.5-2 second. That would help to minimize any unwanted press and AE lock.

The firmware update will not be able to fix the issue if you shoot in dim light and illuminate the LCD with a flashlight. But that can be clarified in the User guide as well.

It’s not really an easy decision for Canon, since this is a very expensive camera and the issue even being very small, is not completely fixable via firmware update, and then had to be informed to the users/customers.

Canon could also gently add some features to compensate and make this camera even more competitive vs. D800

Just to mention few, so much expected by so many users: 1080p50/60, Peaking, Crop Video mode, Clean HDMI output, etc…

Additional fixes & improvements via firmware update

Canon has also to fix some issues (related to some lenses with IS) and a possible inconvenience with CF cards)

They should also improve ALL-I mode performance (CBR if possible!) and sharpening algorithm (when sharpness is set higher than zero, since it produces halos making it almost useless) in next Firmware Update.

This workflow uses After Effects, Neat Video, Synthetic Aperture Color Finess, Colorista II and ProRes. You can adapt the workflow using your own tools and codecs, this technique is the one we used for all our examples.

Applying film grain on top of ISO noise and compression macro blocking will only make your footage dirtier.* Use this workflow or something similar to cleanup your footage before applying any film grain.

*If you are using the latest DSLRs like the Canon 5D MKIII or the new Nikons their encoders are a bit better than the older models and require less cleaning, sometimes none. Under-exposing any DSLRs will result in compression noise.

UPDATE – April 13, 2012: Some comments added:

At first sight, and according to DPReview: “Unlike the C300, the EOS-1D C does not offer zebra striping or peaking focus aids, which the company sees as being more important in single-person operated documentary settings, rather than the rig-and-crew situations it expects the 1D C to be used in.”

This is the  absurdest “reason” we ever heard. Canon seems not willing to implement the most basic focusing aid even in a $15K “Cinema” line camera. This is completely ridiculous. Who would have expected this? Even lot cheaper cameras already offer that essential feature.

We use Canon and we like Canon a LOT, but we can’t agree with this marketing/business decision. It is an abuse, based in part in customers loyalty.

This camera is already overpriced compared to lot other great alternatives in the market, so “at least” Canon should implement as much features as possible and not be crippling/limiting cameras all the time.

Creative Control

The EOS-1D C’s full-frame 24 x 36mm 18.1-megapixel Canon CMOS sensor makes possible a wide range of creative imaging expression, such as image-blur effects. Additional features include an expanded sensitivity range of up to ISO 25600 for exceptional motion-imaging results with reduced noise even in low-light settings. The camera’s ability to record 8-bit 4:2:2 4K and 8-bit 4:2:0 Full HD video to CF cards eliminates the need for an external recorder and enables workflows with increased mobility. 4K video is captured by an approximately APS-H-sized portion of the full image sensor, while Full HD video can be captured in the user’s choice of two different imaging formats:

• 1. The standard Full HD setting captures the full 36mm width of the CMOS sensor to achieve the largest possible angle of view for any compatible lens.
• 2. An optional Super 35 crop setting enables cinematographers to match the industry-standard imaging format and angle of view achieved by traditional motion picture cameras. This enables video footage from the EOS-1D C camera to more closely match the look of footage from other cameras in multi-camera shooting environments.

Other useful video-related features on the EOS-1D C DSLR include a built-in headphone jack for real-time audio monitoring, and the ability to view the camera’s LCD even when the HDMI port is connected to an external monitor. The EOS-1D C camera uses the same LP-E4N battery pack as the EOS-1D X, and it can also be powered by an optional AC Adapter Kit.

It’s already known that you need to cover the viewfinder in bright light conditions since light can get into the metering system, but not so well known that it can also affect in normal room/ambient light. UPDATE – April 8, 2012:  More tests results coming… It’s still not clear if it “really” affects metering under bright light with lens cap off. Since it’s affected with lens cap on, it will be affected with lens cap off, the big question is “how much“.

You will not be able to use top LCD backlight in dim light or at night to check your exposure metering unless Canon fixes it. Not good for a $3,500 camera.

UPDATE – April 7, 2012: More videos added. Even with lens mounted, under bright light or when turning the LCD backlight on the exposure metering is affected. Check below.

There are several reports coming from users about Canon EOS 5D Mark III suffering from some kind of light leak issue.

This is absolutely frustrating. How can Canon release a $3,500 camera body without carefully testing this? Just by turning LCD backlight on, or under bright light you get a wrong exposure metering?

We have already said when the EOS 5D Mark II was released, and now again: Canon must improve quality controls. Although this would fit much better under “Designing & Testing” process instead. Even more in such expensive camera bodies.

It’s important to mention that we have thoroughly tested the Canon EOS 5D Mark II body we have and it does NOT suffer this issue in any situation.

The codec implementation for ALL-I video mode has some issues (noise at low ISO and bad macro blocking compression compared to a cleaner and sharper IPB mode) that needs to be fixed via firmware update. Also the sharpening algorithm has to be improved when sharpness is set higher than “0″, since it’s almost useless, even when the camera has improved the moire/aliasing artifacts so much (* read more at bottom)

But this kind of light leak issue may require a different fix.

Canon 5D Mark III Light Leak?

A light leak? Really?
A light leak issue in the 5D Mark III has been reported over the last couple of days. It seems the top side LCD may be to blame. I can confirm this is happening on at least one of the 5D Mark III’s I own (the rest are out for rent), I will look into the issue with more bodies in the coming days.

Simple Test Procedure

1. Put your body cap on the camera body.
2. Put the viewfinder cover that came with the camera over the viewfinder.
3. Set the camera ISO to 800 and put the camera in “P” mode.
4. Turn on the backlight for the LCD panel and watch the exposure change

Below is a video showing the issue.

Other light sources cause the issue?
Yes, shining a flashlight on the top LCD causes the exposure to change, as does sunlight and bright overhead lights. All of which happen with the body cap on.

Does this matter in the real world?
For the moment, I’m not sure. I haven’t noticed any issues with metering on the 2000 or so shots I’ve put through the 5D Mark III. I’m sure we’ll know more in the coming days.

Additional examples

It is important to note that this issue can be clearly reproduced with the lens cap on. But if the metering system is affected with the lens cap on, it will also be affected without it, that’s obvious (probably in much less amount, but still affected). That is NOT normal in any camera. This would prevent the user to turn on the LCD when shooting at night (when it’s needed), for instance. It’s still not clear how much impact it can do when shooting in bright light conditions without lens cap.

Because Rgrain plates are digitally created they have a very nice uniform quality and still add the natural and organic feel of real film grain. This may be a very big advantage over scanned stock film options.

It is important to mention that Rgrain does carry some plates with a lot of character specifically within the Super 8mm and 16mm packages.

Why Adding Film Grain to Digital Footage?

This is a very important point that not everyone clearly understand. Many HDSLR shooters confuse grain with noise, but in fact they’re completely different.

Adding film grain can do a lot more than just make your videos look like film. It also helps with dithering smooth gradients improving the quality of your videos on video sharing websites like Vimeo. It also helps removing the sharp digital video look by adding a subtle and organic feel to your video projects.

Rgrain made this nice video demonstration to show some of those benefits as well as a comparison between ISO noise and film grain with Rgrain. There are also color graded examples at the end of the video.

Zacuto USA is now the proud worldwide distributer of Okii Systems products. In case you aren’t familiar with the company, Okii Systems specializes in building remote control devices and other accessories for Canon EOS DSLR cameras. In other words, they make the stuff that DSLR filmmakers are looking for. The company is owned and operated by William Paul Tadao Roberson, a computer science graduate of North Carolina State University.

The concept behind Okii Systems came from one of Roberson’s family trips to Japan. Will’s background in embedded systems design and enthusiasm for photography coincided with his brother-in-law Fabio Cordoso’s expertise in filmmaking. Fabio currently runs 3Toad Films and Love Sick Video Journalism in Honolulu, Hawaii. While lugging multiple cameras around Tokyo, Will and Fabio realized that a controller that leveraged Canon’s USB implementation could potentially replace a mechanical follow focus, while providing a whole range of additional functions. This is where Okii Systems began.

One of Okii’s most popular products is the FC1 USB Focus Controller. The FC1 USB Focus Controller connects to your Canon EOS DSLR camera via USB cable and uses the autofocus motor in lenses to control focus. The FC1 does function while recording video and also works in any Live View modes, which can be useful for photography. The HDMI output can still be used in tandem with the controller as well. The nine other switches located around the central focus knob can be used to access important camera functions, such as video start/stop, digital zoom, saving focus points, and adjusting camera settings.

If you don’t need focus control but still want remote video start/stop, digital zoom, and settings changes, the MC1 USB Mini Controller is another option from Okii. The MC1 also connects to your Canon EOS DSLR through a USB cable and easily mounts to your camera rig, providing easy access to your camera functions. Either one of these devices can be attached to your Zgrips with the new Zacuto Okii Bracket. The Okii Bracket will mount your Okii controller to the perfect position where your thumb can get to all of the buttons. The bracket attaches to the Okii with two ¼” 20 button cap screws and screws directly into your Zgrip. For people who do not own Zgrips, Okii also has several of their own mounting solutions, however, the Okii products mounts need to be mounted to a rod that is perpendicular or parallel to where you want the remote to sit. The Zacuto Okii Bracket mounts directly to our grip and still allows for all the articulation and sturdiness that the Zgrips are known for. With the Zacuto Bracket, the remote won’t move at all making it yet another solid piece of your kit.

Okii Systems was discovered by Zacuto Product Designer, Patrick Fee, while searching for a solution for pulling focus on the Zacuto Recoil rig.

“Steve wanted the Recoil rigs to work with DSLR cameras,” says Fee. “But with the camera way up on your shoulder on a Recoil, starting/stopping the camera and making adjustments isn’t very easy. With the C300 Recoil we could just move the handle off of the camera and relocate it to the grips, but for the DSLR cameras we needed to find something to control the camera down at the grips. The Okii USB remote ended up being the perfect answer. Jens and I developed a simple bracket to attach the Okii remote to our Z-Grips and that was it. Now we have a complete recoil rig with camera controls right at the user’s fingertips. It changes the way we operate!”

“The Okii System Remote extends our never been done before Recoil rig concept, of a camera body on the shoulder with no counterweight needed to DSLR’s,” says Product Designer, Jens Bogehegn. ”Now the rigs can be smaller, lighter and more stable than ever.”

Much like Zacuto products, all Okii Systems products are made in the USA. Will Roberson designs the circuit boards and writes the software in North Carolina. The circuit boards are produced in Texas and the CAD and CNC machining is done in Nebraska.

Positioned between the extremely popular EOS 5D Mark II and Canon’s top-of-the-line professional EOS-1D X model, the EOS 5D Mark III delivers superb image quality, thanks to a new 22.3-megapixel full-frame Canon CMOS sensor, a high-performance DIGIC 5+ Imaging Processor, a 61-point High Density Reticular Autofocus (AF) System and six frames-per-second (fps) continuous shooting speed. The EOS 5D Mark III inherits many features from Canon’s recently announced flagship DSLR, the EOS-1D X, including a DIGIC 5+ Imaging Processor and a high-performance 61-point High Density Reticular AF array with up to 41 cross-type points and five dual cross-type points available, depending on the lens in use. The enhanced processing power enables fast continuous shooting of up to six fps, exceeding the speed of the EOS 5D Mark II model by more than 50 percent, and with improved weather resistance the EOS 5D Mark III is a serious option for sports and wildlife photographers.

EOS 5D Mark III Video: The Legacy Continues
The EOS 5D Mark II blazed the trail for EOS cameras and Canon to enter the professional video and cinema markets, paving the way for Canon’s recent introduction of the Cinema EOS system of cameras and lenses. Now, the EOS 5D Mark III continues Canon’s commitment to these new markets with new and requested features from cinematographers, television production professionals and independent filmmakers. This new model captures 1080p Full HD video at 24p (23.976), 25p, and 30p (29.97) fps; 720p HD recording at 60 (59.94) and 50 fps; and SD recording at 30 (29.97) and 25 fps, giving cinematographers and videographers more flexibility and options for video capture.

The EOS 5D Mark III includes new H.264 video compression formats to simplify and speed up post-production work: intraframe (ALL-I) compression for an editing-friendly format and interframe (IPB) compression for superior data storage efficiency, giving professionals options to help achieve their ideal workflow. Like the EOS-1D X, the 5D Mark III also includes two methods of SMPTE-compliant timecode embedding, Rec Run and Free Run, allowing video footage from multiple cameras and separate audio recordings to be synced together in post production.

The new full-frame CMOS sensor and DIGIC 5+ processor have enhanced the camera’s image processing performance over the 5D Mark II, significantly reducing moir‚ and color artifacts in scenes with horizontal lines. The video footage produced will exhibit less moir‚ than seen in previous DSLR models, resulting in a significant improvement in HD video quality. Accommodating documentary filmmakers, and event videographers using EOS DSLR cameras, the 5D Mark III includes the ability to record video continuously up to 29 minutes and 59 seconds across multiple 4GB files. Long-form filmmakers will enjoy the camera’s automatic file splitting in combination with the extended memory capacity offered by dual card slots.

The Canon EOS 5D Mark III also includes manual audio level control with 64 levels, adjustable both before and during movie recording. There is also an automatic audio level setting, or sound recording can be turned off entirely. A wind filter is also included. Sound can be recorded either through the internal monaural microphone or via an optional external microphone through the stereo mic input. Notably, the EOS 5D Mark III is the first EOS Digital SLR to feature a built-in headphone jack for real-time audio monitoring during video capture.

Newly Developed Canon CMOS Sensor
With its completely new 22.3-megapixel full-frame Canon CMOS image sensor, the EOS 5D Mark III becomes the highest resolution Canon Digital SLR released to date. It is eminently suitable for a wide variety of assignments including weddings and portraits, nature and wildlife, travel and landscapes as well as commercial and industrial photography. With a gapless microlens design, a new photodiode structure and improved on-chip noise reduction, the new sensor achieves higher sensitivity and lower noise levels for both RAW image data as well as in-camera JPEGs and EOS Movies compared to the 5D Mark II. The result is outstanding image quality in all shooting conditions, even low light. An eight-channel readout doubles the speed of image data throughput from the sensor to the DIGIC 5+ processor, resulting in better video image quality as well as six fps for still photos.

The low-light capability of the EOS 5D Mark III is evident in its incredible ISO range and image quality in poor lighting conditions. Adjustable from ISO 100 to 25,600 within its standard range, the new model also offers a low ISO 50 setting for studio and landscape photography and two extended ISO settings of 51,200 and 102,400, well suited for law enforcement, government or forensic field applications.

The new 5D Mark III is also equipped with Canon’s EOS Integrated Cleaning System, featuring a Self Cleaning Sensor Unit with a fluorine coating that repels dust and dirt particles.

Canon-Exclusive DIGIC 5+ Imaging Processor
The EOS 5D Mark III’s new DIGIC 5+ Imaging Processor is 17 times faster than the DIGIC 4.The EOS 5D Mark III uses that extra speed not only for improved image quality, but also to add no less than nine new features that do not exist on the 5D Mark II. These new features include six fps continuous shooting, HDR and Multiple Exposure modes, in-camera RAW processing, a comparative playback function, Scene Intelligent Auto mode, two forms of movie compression, and support for high-speed UDMA 7 Compact Flash memory cards.

Another extremely valuable feature enhanced by the DIGIC 5+ Imaging Processor is the EOS 5D Mark III’s choice of reduced resolution M-RAW (10.5 megapixel) and S-RAW (5.5 megapixel) recording modes. These settings are particularly useful to wedding photographers for candid photos that do not require the EOS 5D Mark III’s 22 megapixel full resolution, because they take up less space on the memory cards and speed up post-processing without losing the critical benefits of RAW image data, such as highlight and shadow control as well as white balance adjustment. M-RAW and S-RAW also preserve the full field of view rather than cropping the image or resorting to JPEG mode to reduce resolution.

High-Performance 61-Point High Density Reticular AF
For still photographers, Canon has included its new 61-point High Density Reticular AF System, originally introduced with the top-of-the-line EOS-1D X professional camera. A significant advancement over previous 5D-series AF systems, the new 61-Point High Density Reticular AF included in the EOS 5D Mark III is the most sophisticated SLR AF system Canon has ever released. All 61 points are manually selectable and sensitive to horizontal contrast with maximum apertures larger than or equal to f/5.6. The camera’s twenty one focusing points in the central area are also standard precision cross-type and effective with maximum apertures larger than or equal to f/5.6. The center five points are ultra-high-precision diagonal cross-type points for maximum apertures larger than or equal to f/2.8. The 20 outer focusing points function as high-precision cross-type points with maximum apertures larger than or equal to f/4.0. Other innovations of the new 61-point High Density Reticular AF include expanded AF coverage area, superior focusing precision and low-light sensitivity to EV -2, and greater low-contrast subject detection capability compared to earlier EOS AF systems. All AF functions now have their own menu tab for quick and easy access (formerly AF custom functions in previous EOS models). A new AF Configuration Tool allows for customized setting of tracking sensitivity, the acceleration and deceleration of tracking subjects, and AF point auto switching, all of which are easily accessed and adjusted via the new AF menu tab. A built-in Feature Guide advises photographers on which settings to use according to subject matter.

The EOS 5D Mark III uses the same high-performance AI Servo III AF tracking algorithm as the flagship EOS-1D X professional DSLR. This new feature works together with the 61-point High Density Reticular AF system to provide superb tracking performance that blends very well with the new camera’s 6 frames-per-second high-speed continuous shooting capabilities.

Similar to the AF point selection options offered in the EOS 7D and EOS-1D X camera models, the EOS 5D Mark III offers six AF point selection modes: Spot, Single Point, Single Point with surrounding four points, Single Point with surrounding eight points, Zone selection and Automatic AF point selection.

iFCL Metering
Complementing the EOS 5D Mark III camera’s 61-point AF system is Canon’s 63-zone iFCL dual layer metering system. The ‘FCL’ stands for ‘Focus, Color and Luminance,’ and references the fact that the metering system not only measures color and luminance data, but also analyzes the data provided by each point of the AF system. Canon’s iFCL metering keeps exposure levels stable from shot to shot, even as the light source changes. The camera’s autofocus information is also used to help determine which area of the scene is of greatest importance in determining exposure.

HDR Mode
The EOS 5D Mark III camera features a built-in HDR mode, merging three images at various exposure levels into a single image, in-camera, for stunning photographs of landscapes and architecture with enhanced tonal gradation beyond the range of the naked eye. The exposure levels in the camera’s HDR mode can be set to cover a range of up to ñ3 stops, in a choice of five settings: Natural, Art Standard, Art Vivid, Art Bold and Art Embossed providing unique visual effects. Individual source images can be saved as separate files, and the HDR mode has an optional automatic alignment function that can be useful for hand-held shooting. The EOS 5D Mark III’s standard Auto Exposure Bracketing function has been upgraded to allow for up to seven exposures per sequence, and exposure compensation can now be set for up to +/- 5EV.

Multiple Exposure Mode
The EOS 5D Mark III is the second EOS Digital SLR after the EOS-1D X to feature Multiple Exposure capabilities with the ability to combine up to nine individual images into a single composite image, with no need for post-processing in a computer. Four different compositing methods are provided for maximum creative control, including Additive, Average, Bright and Dark. Compositing results can be viewed in real time on the camera’s LCD monitor, and there is a one-step Undo command that allows photographers to delete an image and try again if desired. The EOS 5D Mark III camera’s Multiple Exposure mode even allows photographers to specify a previously captured RAW image as the starting point for a new Multiple Exposure composite image, or shoot continuously when photographing moving subjects.

Comparative Playback
A new feature seen for the first time in the EOS System on the 5D Mark III is Comparative Playback allowing photographers to display two images side by side on the camera’s 3.2-inch LCD screen. The images can be displayed with a histogram to check exposure levels, or magnified to check for focus or facial expressions.

Durability, Reliability and Other Features
The EOS 5D Mark III features a rugged camera body with magnesium alloy body covers and a stainless steel lens mount. The new camera also has dust- and moisture-resistant design with improved gaskets and seals. Although not quite as weatherproof as an EOS-1D-series camera, the EOS 5D Mark III does feature improved weather resistance over the EOS 5D Mark II model. The EOS 5D Mark III’s newly developed shutter unit has a durability rating of 150,000 exposures, and shutter release lag time has been reduced to 59 milliseconds, making the shutter button very responsive. Canon’s locking mode dial is standard on the new model and a new custom function allows photographers to shut off other dials to prevent inadvertent operation.

The EOS 5D Mark III uses the same LP-E6 lithium-ion battery pack as other popular EOS cameras like the 5D Mark II, 7D and 60D. Battery life is estimated at 950 exposures at normal temperatures, an improvement of 100 exposures more than the EOS 5D Mark II. The EOS 5D Mark III body weighs approximately 33.5 oz. with a battery installed, and the dimensions are approximately 6.0 x 4.6 x 3.0 inches.

The EOS 5D Mark III incorporates Silent shooting modes, available for low-speed continuous shooting as well as single exposures. This feature is ideal when photographing in quiet environments. For better file management especially when working with multiple cameras, the new model also supports custom file names. There is also a new image rating feature that lets photographers rank their photos from 1 to 5 stars for quick editing.

The EOS 5D Mark III features a 3.2-inch Clear View II LCD screen with 1,040,000 dot resolution. This is the same screen that’s used in the top-of-the-line EOS-1D X. The camera’s optical viewfinder has been upgraded to approximately 100 percent coverage, and it features an Intelligent Viewfinder display with an optional grid on demand. The EOS 5D Mark III also has a built-in Dual Axis Electronic Level that can be displayed on both the LCD screen and the optical viewfinder.

The EOS 5D Mark III accepts both Compact Flash Type 1 and SD/SDHC/SDXC memory cards in a dual card slot configuration. Three recording methods are supported: Record the same data to both cards, record different file sizes or types to each card, or automatically switch to the second card when the first card is full.

Accessories
The EOS 5D Mark III DSLR also has a number of new optional accessories, including the new Canon Wireless File Transmitter WFT-E7A featuring wireless LAN support for 802.11 a/b/g/n signal protocols for various network environments. The WFT-E7A connects to the camera through its USB port and includes a built-in gigabit Ethernet connection, time syncing for multiple cameras on the same network, FTP mode, EOS Utility mode, WFT Server mode and Media Server mode. With this new WFT model, professionals can synchronize clocks on multiple cameras and use the unit to support linked shooting when utilizing multiple cameras. In addition, Bluetooth-compatible equipment can be easily linked to the device as well.

The EOS 5D Mark III also has an optional Canon GPS Receiver GP-E2, which can be connected to the camera via the accessory shoe or a USB cable. With a GPS logging function built-in, the GP-E2 will log latitude, longitude, elevation, and the Universal Time Code – and allow viewing of camera movement on a PC after shooting. With its built-in compass, the GP-E2 receiver will also record camera direction when shooting, even when shooting vertically. The Canon GPS Receiver GP-E2 is compatible with the EOS-1D X and EOS 7Di as well as the EOS 5D Mark III.ii

Battery Grip BG-E11 is an optional accessory for the EOS 5D Mark III that accepts one or two LP-E6 lithium-ion battery packs or a set of six AA-size batteries. This new grip has a multicontroller and a multifunction (M.Fn) button together a with a full set of grip controls for easy operation when shooting portraits or other vertical format photos. The BG-E11 is made from sturdy magnesium alloy and has the same degree of weather resistance as the EOS 5D Mark III.

Speedlite 600EX-RT
In addition to the EOS 5D Mark III, Canon is also announcing the first professional Speedlite on the market with a built-in wireless radio transmitter, the new Speedlite 600EX-RT. The new Canon Speedlite 600EX-RT is the flagship model in the Speedlite line, ideal for wedding portrait and photojournalism. Compatible with all EOS Digital SLRs, this new model eliminates the need for accessory radio slave units and their inherent limitations. Speedlite 600EX-RT features Master-Slave two-way transmission, letting the photographer control the Speedlite settings directly from the “Master” camera.

Radio-based Wireless E-TTL can be performed with up to 15 Speedlite 600EX-RT “slave units”, used off-camera up to 98.4 feet (30m) away, and triggered by either a “Master” 600EX-RT on-camera, or the optional new Speedlite Transmitter ST-E3-RT. Used with the EOS 5D Mark III or EOS-1D X, up to five groups of flashes can be completely controlled, independently, off-camera. And, it remains fully compatible with Canon’s legacy optical-based Wireless E-TTL technology, for users already committed to existing EOS Speedlites. The Speedlite features enhanced weather-resistant construction – matching that of the EOS-1D X camera body – and a more reliable electrical contact. The flash head zoom range now reaches from 20mm to 200mm.The Speedlite also allows remote shutter release of a single EOS camera, or Linked Shooting (simultaneous firing of up to 15 cameras, when one “Master” camera is fired), and includes gelatin filters and a dedicated filter holder to help photographers match ambient light.

Speedlite Transmitter ST-E3-RT
Canon is also introducing the new Speedlite Transmitter ST-E3-RT. Providing full support of Canon’s new radio-based wireless flash technology, the new ST-E3-RT can control up to five groups of flashes, up to 98.4 feet (30m) from the camera. The remote shutter release capability enables photographers to either fire a single camera remotely (by pressing a button on the ST-E3-RT), or to fire up to 15 EOS cameras with Canon’s Linked Shooting feature. Making it easy to control and adjust, all of the Speedlite Transmitter features are accessible through the Flash control menu of the EOS-1D X and EOS 5D Mark III cameras.

The Canon EOS 5D Mark III Digital SLR camera is expected to be available at the end of March 2012 and will be sold in a body-only configuration at an estimated retail price of $3,499.00. The EOS 5D Mark III will also be available with the EF24-105mm f/4L IS USM zoom lens in a kit for an estimated retail price of $4,299.00. The Wireless File Transmitter WFT-E7A is scheduled to be available by the end of April 2012 at an estimated retail price of $849.99.
